OLIVE OIL & HEALTH
Olive oil has been a cornerstone of both culinary excellence and healthy living for thousands of years. In its purest form — extra virgin olive oil — it remains one of nature’s most powerful and least processed foods. Rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, it supports heart health by helping to lower “bad” LDL cholesterol while protecting “good” HDL cholesterol.
What truly sets it apart, however, is its high content of powerful antioxidants, particularly polyphenols. These compounds help combat free radicals, reduce cellular damage, and may slow the aging process. They also strengthen the immune system and play a protective role against chronic diseases.Beyond cardiovascular benefits, olive oil supports digestive health by soothing the stomach, promoting healthy gut function, and aiding overall metabolic balance.
As the foundation of the renowned Mediterranean diet, regular consumption is strongly linked to longevity and improved quality of life.On the outside, its natural vitamin E content nourishes the skin, provides deep hydration, and promotes a healthy, radiant glow. In short, olive oil is far more than a cooking ingredient — it is a symbol of a healthy lifestyle that nourishes both body and soul.
SHELF LIFE & PROPER STORAGE of OLIVE OIL
Does olive oil have a shelf life?
Yes. Like all natural foods, olive oil has a limited period of peak quality.
Many people mistakenly believe olive oil never spoils because it doesn’t support microbial growth. However, it is highly sensitive to oxygen, light, and heat. Improper storage can quickly degrade its flavor, aroma, and nutritional value through oxidation.
Common mistakes that damage olive oil:
Leaving half-empty bottles open for long periods.
Storing in clear bottles exposed to light.
Keeping it near the stove or in warm places.
Using metal containers that allow air contact.
Exposure to direct sunlight.
Best storage practices:
Use dark glass bottles or quality tin containers that block light.
Keep the bottle tightly sealed.
Store in a cool, dark place (ideally 14–18°C).
Avoid frequent temperature changes.
When stored correctly, high-quality extra virgin olive oil maintains its freshness, flavor, and health benefits for 18 to 24 months from the harvest date. After this period, it doesn’t become harmful,
but it gradually loses its vibrant taste, aroma, and nutritional potency.
